Fishing: Guide & Datamining of all fish and axolotl

[Update 4th June 2025] Curved Fish Display was added to Daily plans
[Update 27th May 2025] Axolotl Sorting & Import Error fixed
Fishing is the big theme of Season 21 in Fallout 76. You can basically cast your line in any body of water in Appalachia, no matter how small. There are various fishing rods, baits, hooks and bobbers that can be used to optimize your fishing.
Depending on the area, you can catch different fish. The better the bait, the higher the chance of catching rare fish. The weather also plays a role. The rarest catch is axolotls; they are very rare, and only one variety can be caught per month.
There are also plenty of new challenges, as well as a quest and a daily with many new rewards.

New Quest "Casting Off"
To unlock fishing, you must complete the new quest "Casting Off." You'll speak with Captain Raymond Clark at the new location, Angler's Rest. Your task is to catch some fish and cook up some fish bites. Fishing will be unlocked during the quest. After the quest, the new daily will also be available. Numerous new rewards await you there.

New Location "Fisherman`s Rest"
The new Anglers Rest location is located right next to Valley Galleria in the far east of Appalachia.

You'll find three new NPCs at this location:
Linda Lee: A giant hermit crab and pet of the "Fisherman." If you give her fish bits while she's hungry, you can receive legendary weapons, armor, and power armor as rewards (1-3 Stars). Only give her 25 Fish Bits each to receive legendary items and don't waste your fish bits.

The Fisherman: A quiet, strange "fish-man" who likes to sharpen his knives. Here you can buy common fishing bait.

Captain Raymond Clark: The old sailor is the most talkative of the three NPCs. He gives you tasks for the new quest and also provides you with the new daily. You can also buy common fishing bait from him.

How fishing works in Fallout 76

You stand by a body of water. If you now look at the water, you'll have a new option to cast your line. Hold down the fishing button and you'll be in fishing mode. Here you can change the view, change the bait, and cast your line.

Bait Types
There are three types of bait: Common, Improved, and Superb.
You can obtain common bait from Captain Raymond Clark and the Fisherman, as well as from new collectors in your camp.
Improved bait can be obtained from the following activities: all public events as well as engame events like Encryptid, Scorched Earth (Queen), A Colossal Problem (Earle Williams), Seismic Activity (Ultacite Titan), Neurological Warfare, and also from the caravans in Milestone Zero.
Superb bait is only available during the season. It may also be available later in the Atom Shop. So be sparing with it.
Fishing Rod Improvements
You now always have your fishing rod with you. However, you can't see it in your inventory. You have to craft replicas for the display cases at the crafting workbench. Real fishing rods cannot be displayed.
There are numerous skins for fishing rods in the Atom Shop and the season, as well as various bobbers.
There are also various mods for reels, hooks, bobbers, and rods. You can use a tinker workbench to change the mods.
The mods each change the following attributes: time to hook, line strength, reel in speed, catch zone, and rotation speed. Generally, it seems better to use a stronger line for larger fish; the other attributes are a matter of taste in my opinion. It's best to try it out for yourself.
To catch Axolotl you should at least use Mark 2 Reel and Advanced Drag mod. For bigger fish use even better reels.
Reels are available from the Challenges. Mods are a Daily Reward.

Weather Conditions
There are basically three different weather conditions relevant for fishing.
- Clear Sky
- Rain
- Nuke Zone / Rad Storm
You can not only use these conditions from the surroundings, but also create them yourself with a weather control station in your camp.
Clear Sky
Can be created with the standard weather control station.
Rain
Can be created with the following weather control stations: Snow, Snow Aurora, and Thunderstorm.
Nuke Zone / Rad Storm
Can be created with the following weather control stations: Mothman, Nuke Zone, Rad Storm and Skyline Valley.
