Improved Bait: Events & Container Datamining

Improved Bait: Events & Container Datamining

Since June 3rd, 2025, it's been possible to go fishing in Fallout 76. This brings with it a new quest and a new daily. But also numerous new challenges for which you receive rewards and improvements for your fishing rod. You can find information about these below in the "related articles."

You can use three different types of bait for fishing: Common Bait, Improved Bait, and Superb Bait. You can simply buy the common bait from the captain and fisherman in Fisherman's Rest, but they won't let you catch axolotls, for example, but rather generic and common fish. You can get the premium bait from the season; there's nothing else available at the moment, so you should be very frugal with them. However, you can get the improved bait in various places in Fallout 76, and they allow you to catch all types of fish (including axolotls). Therefore, you'll find a datamine with the improved bait here.

Events with Improved Bait

Generally, all public events drop improved bait. This includes seasonal events. Caravans also offer improved lures upon completion.

As you can see from this list, there is no event where you receive more than three baits. All of these events will randomly award you between one and three improved baits. Events not included in this list will not award you any improved baits.

Containers with Improved Bait

In addition to events, you also have the opportunity to obtain improved baits from containers in the world of Appalachia:

  • Broken Refrigerators (those you can't open)
  • Coolers
  • Lunch Pails

In addition to the locations on the following map, there are also indoor locations that aren't found on the map. A good place to find broken refrigerators is

  • Valley Galleria, for example.
There's a home appliance store with 16 broken refrigerators.
  • Watoga also offers both refrigerators and coolers with possible improved bait.
  • Nuka World also offers 12 broken refrigerators

The chance of finding bait from containers is 10%. However, this includes both improved bait (7.5% chance) and regular bait spawns (2.5% possible).

FYI: The perk card "Can Do!" does not help here, because it just triggers a small list of prewar food.

Tip: If the containers don't contain any improved bait, leave the items in. This way, you'll have a chance to get more loot when you changeservers. The containers contribute to the list of 255 items and only spawn when the respective container isn't on the list. If in doubt, reset your list regularly. See also: Respawning items.
