Jon Rush about Patch 76: "Your Heads are going to explode"
It's been over 7 years since Fallout 76 was released in 2018. Since then, there have been 66 patches, 25 of which were major content updates. All of these updates were free. While there is a bundle available for each major update, it's purely cosmetic and doesn't include any additional content. So, anyone who owns the game has been receiving free expansions with more content since 2018.
The latest update, "The Backwoods", was released on March 3, 2026, and included many improvements to existing events, focusing on better gameplay experiences and better rewards.
Jon Rush, the Creative Director of Fallout 76, recently attended a press event at Bethesda's main location in Maryland. He gave the press an overview of Fallout 76's history and then spoke in an interview with "Game Rant" about the regular update cycles and future plans leading up to Patch 76.
He explained that the current patch doesn't carry the same weight as other patches. Jon Rush said:
As of just a week ago, we released The Backwoods. The Backwoods is our 66th update for Fallout 76—66th, and it's all been free to existing players. The Backwoods update underlines the intended cadence and candor of our varied releases. Our key release periods are summer, fall, and winter. We get the big content updates hitting in the summer and winter patches, aimed at exciting players to bring them into the game. Spring and fall are for introducing or expanding upon systems within the current boundaries of our map.
This gives us a good roadmap for when we can expect which changes in Fallout 76. And that the next PTS for the summer update will most likely bring many more interesting new features.
We can expect a lot of new major content in both the summer and winter updates, while the core gameplay of Fallout 76 will be improved in the spring and fall updates.
Rush continued:
The long-term goal of those types of updates is to increase player enjoyment over time so they're happy with the fun and rewarding game loops they experience within Fallout 76, and that's exactly where The Backwoods comes in. Activities typically requiring 1 to 2 players and larger public events requiring full groups are the lifeblood of our player retention. Players engage with these because they're simple, fun, and rewarding. In The Backwoods, we revisit all 50 of them. Players will earn more experience, more caps, more legendaries, more rare resources, and most importantly, more fun.
Anyone who has played Fallout 76 since March 3, 2026, will have noticed this. We're getting many more legendary items, better rewards, and there's always something to do. Public events take place every 20 minutes, featuring more legendary enemies. Nuclear missiles are launched in between (e.g., because players want the new "Rage" armor from the "A Colossal Problem" event), bounty hunts are started, and for those who are still bored, there are now significantly more rewarding activities to choose from.
Tip: All Enclave activities are worthwhile for Enclave Plasma Mods and weapons.
Patch 76 Will Be Something Special
We now know where Fallout 76 currently stands, but what awaits us in the future? Jon Rush also had some hints about this. It's worth noting that Rush regularly leaves hints in the game, including in the game's title menu and other locations, that point to upcoming updates and features.

In this interview, Jon Rush gave another hint. The discussion centered on Patch 76, which promises to be something truly special for Fallout 76. Bethesda already has detailed plans for what will happen in the patches leading up to it and what we can expect in Patch 76.
Jon Rush said:
I know exactly what the 76th patch is, and your heads are going to explode when I'm able to talk about that. I know exactly what it is. That's going to be pretty cool. It truly is.
What do you think he means by that? Is it just a metaphor? Or is it actually a game mechanic with exploding heads?
So when can we expect Patch 76? We're currently on Patch 66, and according to the current update schedule, we'll reach Patch 76 in the summer of 2027.
We're already very excited about what awaits us. And we can probably look forward to this summer's patch as well.
