Origin and History

Appalachia's Super Mutants originated from experiments involving the Forced Evolutionary Virus (FEV). The virus was developed by West Tek as part of a research program for the United States government and was originally intended to provide protection against biological weapons. As the research increasingly came under U.S. military control, West Tek's Appalachian facility was ordered in 2076 to test FEV on human subjects. West Tek secretly introduced a strain of FEV into the water supply of Huntersville, unknowingly turning the town's residents into test subjects. As the population began to mutate, the town was quarantined and the effects of the virus were studied further. These experiments ultimately produced Appalachia's first Super Mutants.

After the Great War, the Enclave under Thomas Eckhart resumed the FEV research. Eckhart sought to raise Appalachia's automated DEFCON level in order to gain access to the region's nuclear missile silos. To achieve this, the Enclave created and released various threats throughout Appalachia. Using research left behind by West Tek, they also produced additional Super Mutants, which were subsequently released into the region.

Decades later, former West Tek scientist Dr. Edgar Blackburn continued the FEV research. Blackburn believed that the virus could be perfected to help humanity adapt to the hostile post-war world. Together with other scientists, he experimented on kidnapped human subjects and created additional Super Mutants. Eventually, Blackburn tested his improved strain of FEV on himself. Instead of achieving the evolution he had hoped for, however, he transformed into a massive Super Mutant Behemoth and was ultimately stopped by the Brotherhood of Steel and the Vault Dweller.
