Season 21: "Gone Fission"     Start: 3rd Jun 2025 10:00 Articles about the season

Tips for Fallout 76 beginners

basics

  • All items, tools, skill cards, mutations, armor give an overall picture of how "strong" your character is in the game

  • It's not enough to own a certain weapon in order to survive against all opponents.

  • All information about your weapons, armor, tools, quests, etc. can be found in your  PipBoy .

  • Place objects and tools that you use often on the " speed wheel " so that you don't have to search in the PipBoy when you need something fast.

  • Make sure you have enough ammo, stimpacks, (water and food).
(Hunger and thirst no longer have negative effects, so that's a minor thing now.)

  • When you select a quest in the PipBoy, there is an option at the bottom to   move to the next task of the quest on the map . This will help you find your next destination more easily on the map.

  • Your  stash box  can hold anything you don't want or can't carry on your man/woman and can  hold a maximum of 1200  .

  • You can access your stash box  from anywhere . Both in other CAMPs and at train stations, in survival tents and anywhere else you see stash boxes. A stash box in another CAMP is not someone else's box, but always your own. The same applies to the scrap box (infinite scrap box from Fallout 1st).

  • Try to plan a skillset right from the start   so that you don't "wrongly" select cards that you don't want to use at all when you level up. There are various tools for planning (best decide if you want to play Auto Rifles, Single Shot Rifles, Heavy Weapons, Melee, Shotguns, Pistols, with/without Power Armor, Full Life/Gorystained/Junkie). For more build / char ideas you can create up to 5 chars.
    - Build planners can be found here:
    https://nukesdragons.com/fallout76/perks
    - You can find examples of skillsets/builds under the "Builds" topic:  https://nukaknights.com/blog/builds/
    - You can build your skill tree via  Change loadouts at stations or in your camp. There are 2 free Skill Loadouts, up to 11 can be purchased in the Atom Shop.

  • You can access your  skill cards  via the PipBoy, for example via the Y button on the Xbox/T button on the PC when the PipBoy is open.

  • Atom Shop : All purchased items (except repair kits) are available for use on all chars at the workbenches or in CAMP.

  •  Try to collect your Atoms daily and weekly via the  challenges , then you can earn lots of things from the Atom Shop for free.

  • By  sleeping  (about 30 seconds) you get +5% XP (experience points) bonus for 2 hours.

  • By playing an  instrument  (about 30 seconds) you get an AP (Action Points) bonus.

  • Action Points  (AP) are needed for sprinting and VATS

  • Keep an eye on your  weight  , if you are overloaded you will not be able to fast travel and will be immobile.
    - Dismantle scrap as often as possible and then store it
    - Dismantle and store weapons and armor that you don't need
    - Gunpowder is heavy, store or process it
    - If you don't play them, regularly throw 40mm grenades, mini nukes, fuel, cannonballs, Missiles and other heavy ammunition away.
    - Sell surplus food and chems to the bots at the train stations to save weight and earn caps.
    - See also Carrying Capacity Buffs under the Utilities heading.

  • You can see active  effects, mutations & buffs  in the PipBoy in the far left tab under "Effects". It says which buffs are active, for example from food, alcohol, chems, how long they last and what they do.

Quests & Leveling

  • If you are serious about playing Fallout 76, focus  on the quests in the beginning : main quests, side quests plus events and daily ones. You will learn a lot about the story, discover important locations, get items, plans and lots of XP. This will level you up automatically.

  • Focus  on a few quests at a time. Only activates the quests in the PipBoy that he wants to do at the moment.

  •  All quests and event points are displayed on the  map . Inactive ones are black, active ones are yellow. They can also be activated and deactivated on the map.

  • If you  don't know places  yet, try to find a CAMP with vending machines near the destination on public servers, for example, and continue walking from there.

weapons / armor

  • If weapons/armor have 1-3 stars next to their name, they are  legendary . There is always a main effect for the first star and limited options for the 2nd and 3rd stars.

  • There are a lot of weapons/armor that are useless despite legendary effects. Which ones are right for you depends on your  specialization  in a skillset and weapon type.

  • Legendary weapons  can only be obtained from legendary opponents or partly as event/quest rewards. Not from normal enemies.

  • Legendary weapons/armor that are inappropriate for you can be thrown into a " Legendary Vending Machine " at any train station. You will then receive points in the form of "legendary scrip". Max 500 per day. Max 6000 in total.

  • With the " Legendary Notes " you collect, you can get new random Legendary Weapons/Armor from the Legendary Merchant (in the Rusty Pick / Ash Heap) or buy  Legendary Modules and  create your own Legendary Weapons with Legendary Modules and Legendary Cores  at the workbench  . You can get Legendary Cores as a reward from public events (marked with !).

  • You can " mod " all weapons and armor at workbenches and rebuild them as you need them. Whether legendary or not.

  • You learn mods for weapons and armor by " scrapping " found weapons/armor. You can see how many mods you have learned on the respective workbench on the right above the list of mods.

  • Armor and Underarmor only has  an effect without Power Armor  . Your armor is discarded in power armor.

  • Underarmor  with appropriate modifications can additionally improve your SPECIAL points and damage resistances etc.

  • If you'd like to play in power armor, here are some tips on how to  craft, farm, and recharge fusion cores  : All About Fusion Core Farming & Recharge

camera

  • You need it for some challenges/quests

  •  You get a  camera via the quest "Last Wishes". Check out this article: Camera: This is the quickest way to get the ProSnap Deluxe camera

  • You activate the quest  "Last Wishes"  via your  "Personal Terminal" in the CAMP  under the item "Unknown Person", there you will find the famous tourist. (No server hopping like before, the location is marked just for you.)

  • You can get your "Personal Terminal" for free in the Atomic Shop

backpacks

  • As soon as you leave the vault you will receive your first  "small" backpack . At the Scout Camp (boy scout pioneer camp in Toxic Valley) you can earn the standard backpack and later various mods for it (large, refrigerator, etc.).

  • Skins  from the Atom Shop can now be used on the small and the standard backpack. As well as mods.

  • Backpacks can  only  be carried without power armor .

  •  You can exchange mods for the backpacks at the Boy Scouts (Camp Adams / Camp Lewis) for opossum badges. With the settlers (food weight reduction) and raiders (stimpacks/chems weight reduction) there is also a mod each with the appropriate reputation (friendly).

  •  You can earn opossum badges in the Boy Scout Challenges (under World) or in the daily events Crawling Creature Hunt (Dolly Sods), Shining Clean (Kiddie Corner Huts) and Stories by the Campfire (Camp Adams) with a chance of around 25% .

resources

  • Loot , loot, loot: In order to have enough resources, it is important to loot everything you find, especially at the beginning. Opponents and vessels in the world.

  • Equally important:  Disassemble . And as often as possible. So either set up the 1st survival tent at every workbench you come across or after every location.

  • If you  don't have Fallout 1st  (see below), you should always  collect plastic  to  make bulk use  of resources. This saves space in your stash. With large quantities, however, you should also keep an eye on how much you actually need. You can sell excess quantities to the bots at the train stations.

  • Always dismantle unneeded looted weapons & armor and store in bulk or salvage box (Fallout 1st) .

  • Important resources for  ammunition  are: Lead, Steel, Acid, Cloth

    • Lead  can be farmed as  ore  (Lucky Hole mine) and processed into lead with acid

    • In order to mine lead ores efficiently, you should always  have excavator armor  , even if you don't use it otherwise, since excavator armor can mine 4 times the amount of ore.

  • Important for  cooking  : wood

  • For  CAMP construction : wood, steel, concrete, copper, glass and others depending on the object

aids

  • Your character is always hungry and thirsty. Accordingly, you should always have some treated  water  and  food  with you. Not too much, otherwise it will make you too difficult.

  • Radiation : You will be irradiated everywhere. That means you need chems. Best RadAway, diluted RadAway or before prevention RadShield. You should only use Rad-X if you don't have any mutations (yet), because Rad-X suppresses the mutations. With mutations you can use diluted Rad-X or RadShield without them being subdivided.

  • Healing : As soon as enemies are nearby or you are in the water, you can already catch diseases. Therefore, it is always good to have a remedy or antibiotic with you.

  • It's always good   to have carrying capacity buffs with you. Grilled rad deer, fried ants, salami rolls or whiskey, deathclaw steak, buckeye fillet increase your carrying capacity or strength and thus your carrying capacity and help you to compensate for small overhangs, for example.

ammunition

  • You can   craft ammo at a crafting workbench

  • In order to produce the maximum amount from your resources, always set the Munitionssmith card  to 2 (under Agility) and the  Super Duper card  to 3 (under Luck) in your skill cards before production  .

  •  You can make gunpowder from acid and cloth at the lab workbench.

  • Since the Nuka World Update there is now also an infinite ammo box with Fallout 1st . There you can store everything except fusion cores and plasma cores.

caps

  •  You can sell things to the bots at the train stations for 1400 caps per day . The budget is always reset  20 hours after you completed the first sale on the previous day. All hands have also been reset since June 20th, 2023 with the reset of the daily challenges (at 1 p.m.), this also applies to the surrender of the legendary scrip!

  •  You can have a maximum of 40,000 caps per char.

  • You will also receive bottle caps from many  events and quests  .

  • Many enemies like super mutants, mega sloths, etc. have bottle caps as  loot  .

  • Always sell  any tools and chems you don't use to the bots to earn caps and lose weight.

  • Set up Vending Machines in your  CAMP  and sell duplicate plans, weapons (which should not be in the legendary machines), ammunition (1 cap per shot), etc.

  • If you have the opportunity, you can also   invest in a serum recipe and then produce serums and sell them in the CAMP vending machine or directly to the bots and thus improve your bottle cap account.

gold

  • You get government bonds  after the quest line at events or dailies.

  • You get gold by  exchanging government bonds  (in Foundation or Crater at the gold vending machine) max 400 gold per day.

  •  You can have a maximum of 10,000 gold

  • Depending on your  reputation level  , you can use the gold to get the Arable Earth from the settlers, for example, or the Gauss Minigun from the raiders (max reputation). Regs in Vault 79 have it right after the raid without reputation requirements, for example Secret Service armor plans for the T-65 power armor.

  • You can buy items from the new Blue Ridge Caravan trader " Minerva " for gold. The offer changes every week, it is always in front of either Crater, Foundation or Atlas. Normally she is present from Mon-Wed, during campaigns (every 4 weeks) from Thu-Mon. See separate post.

  • You only have access to what Regs offer in Vault 79 after the Vault 79 Raid (with the Settlers or Raiders) at the end of the  Wastelanders quest line  .

CAMP

  • Always set up several  water purifiers  so that you can always take something with you when you visit camp so that you always have enough water.

  • Set up all the necessary  workbenches  so that they are easily accessible. Best with stash boxes in the immediate vicinity to keep the walking distances short.

  • Build  beds  and  instruments  to regularly refresh your XP and AP bonus.

  • To   route power through walls you need the Advanced Power Connections blueprint, which you can obtain from the Free States Bot at the bottom of Whitespring Resort.

  • You can have multiple  camp slots  . However, only one camp can be set up at a time. You can switch to the other slots at any time. 2 slots are free, 3 can be purchased in the Atom Shop.

mutations

  • You get mutations randomly at the beginning through  radiation  . With RadAway you lose the mutations again.

  • Mutations have various  positive  and  negative  effects

  • The effects are described in more detail in PipBoy in the left tab under Effects

  • From level 30 you can select the  Starked Genes card  under Luck. This way you keep the mutations and they don't go away anymore by taking RadAway. This is the point at which one can specifically purchase and ingest mutation serums to take advantage of mutations.

  • From level 46 you can still  equip Class Freak  under Luck, and thus reduce the negative effects of the mutations by 75%.

  • Which mutations  make sense for you depends on the skill cards and weapons you play. The basic equipment usually includes: marsupial and eg speeder

  • Immediately after consuming a mutation as a serum, the  negative effects are suppressed for 1 hour . After that, the mutation works as intended with all positive and negative effects.

  • By taking  Rad-X  you briefly  suppress the effects  of your mutations.

Fallout 1st

  • Monthly  costs  between €9.99 and €14.99 (depending on the monthly or annual subscription)
  • Infinite junk box
  • Your  stash box stays free of scrap  and you can store significantly more.
  • Infinite ammo box
  • You can  set up your survival tent anywhere (where there is no place or CAMP) and store scrap there, store ammunition, recycle items, get items from your stash, go to sleep (for XP bonus), play instruments (for AP bonus) and you also protect from opponents (by taking shelter behind or on top of the tent)
  • The survival tents each have different equipment. Some have a workbench, some don't. they all have a stashbox and salvage box. So far, only the Nuka Cola survival tent from season 12 has an ammo box. An instrument is also not in every survival tent. The tents are each available for a short time (usually free with 1st), once you have claimed these offers you can change tents at any time.
  • You will automatically receive  1650 Atoms per month  for purchases in the Atom Shop
  •  Various outfits, survival tents, emotes, etc. are available for 1st members in the  Atom Shop
