Item respawn and enemy respawn, that's how it works. Loot lists explained.

To better understand how spawns and enemy and item respawns work in Fallout 76, there are a few things you should know. Enemies usually respawn after 10 minutes, items are stored in a 255 items list and only spawn if they are not on this list. The list remains no matter how log you are not logged in the game. Also if you come back after 4 years, the list remains on the same state.

Why is this important?

As soon as you want to find and farm specific items in Appalachia, it is important to understand when and how these items spawn. Once you've picked up an item, it won't spawn for you on the next server because it's in your loot list. If you know that you can control this logic, you will be much more successful and find what you are looking for.

Here is a more detailed explanation of how this works
(inspired by this Youtube Video):

Respawn items

  • Loose items are handled slightly differently:

    • Each server has a list of items that have been looted. This list is very long and it takes many hours to respawn on this server.

    • Furthermore, each player or char has a list of items that he has looted. This list contains 255 items . As you loot items, this list will be populated. If you pick up more, the items picked up first will be deleted from the list and drops off the end. So the 255 most recently looted items are always in this list. Loose items count as 1 entry in the list, containers (regardless of how much they contain) also only count as 1 entry in the list.

    • Items cannot be respawned on the same server for many hours like the enemies described above. (On the other hand, change the server.)

    • Each area on the map is initially empty until a player enters the area. The items only spawn when a player enters the area. Depending on the list of the 255 most recently picked up items and also with a 10-minute cooldown, like the enemies.
Some items have fixed spawns (e.g. golf balls, newspapers, etc) and others are rarer and spawn randomly (e.g. chems, bobbleheads, magazines, bottle cap supplies)

      • These spawns depend on the list of the player entering the area.
For example, if you have completely looted an area and want to loot a certain item again, it must have already "dropped" from your 255 items list and you must have entered a new server . These items will spawn there again.

      • Even if 255 sounds like a lot, in practice this list is not very long. eg the golf club alone has more than 255 items if you record everything.

    • Plants are also included in this 255 list. However, respawns are not as predictable as normal items. In some cases, the plants do not spawn for you even on new servers or you cannot pick them in some cases.

Enemies respawn

  • Enemies will respawn after 10 minutes  in most cases

    • This applies to the fissure site locations without further conditions . There you can simply check again after 10 minutes and find new enemies.

    • For all other places it is more complicated:

      • If a player is in the empty area with no opponents, a new player (requires rejoin to server) must  join the area to trigger the respawn.

        • However, the  respawn will be prevented if another player is in the area at the same time. The enemies do not spawn again.

        • This problem can be avoided if the  player simply crouches in the area that is supposed to respawn . Then the enemies spawn again as soon as a new player enters the server and area as described. The enemies spawn here now with a level adjusted to the level of the crouched player.

      • The  level of respawns  depends on the player entering or standing (crouched) in the area. There is a problem: If you join a server, it sometimes takes a moment until your character's level is loaded, until then you are level 1. That means the enemies respawn in this case at a low level. If you want to prevent this, don't spawn on a new server right where you want to meet new enemies, rather spawn a little further away so that your level is loaded when the respawn is triggered.

  • Enemies in instances respawn immediately after entering another instance. Best-known example: When you enter the West Tek instance, the enemies will spawn for you. If you now go down in the elevator, you will enter another instance, this will reset the West Tek instance and the enemies will spawn again when you take the elevator back up. Likewise if you are out of instant for 1-2 minutes.
